Niederlassungserlaubnis
Permanent settlement permit
Helpful when…
You want to move from a temporary permit to a permanent right to live in Germany.
What it is
A Niederlassungserlaubnis is a permanent residence title. A lawyer checks which route applies to you, when you can apply and the evidence you need. [1]
How a lawyer can help
Review your residence history.
Provide your current title and a timeline of previous permits, work and study.
Check the applicable route.
The lawyer assesses the relevant residence, income, language and other requirements and any exceptions.
Prepare the evidence.
Agree who will obtain documents, submit the application and answer the authority’s questions.
A helpful starting point
Your current permit, residence history and any documents you already have about work, income or language.
What the law says
Section 9 AufenthG sets out the general route. Section 18c includes special routes for skilled workers and EU Blue Card holders. The qualifying period and other conditions depend on the route. [1] [2]
Common questions
Is permanent residence the same as naturalisation?
No. A settlement permit concerns your residence status. Naturalisation concerns becoming a German citizen.
Do all applicants have to wait the same number of years?
No. General and special routes differ. The lawyer needs to review your residence history and current title.
