Anwaltliche Sachstandsanfrage
Lawyer’s request for an application update
Helpful when…
Your application is pending and you want a lawyer to ask the authority about its progress.
What it is
A lawyer writes to the authority to ask how your application is progressing, whether anything is missing and when you can expect the next step. This is the German term for a lawyer’s status enquiry. [1]
How a lawyer can help
Set out the timeline.
Share when you applied, what you submitted and any requests or replies since then.
Agree the letter.
The lawyer checks what to ask, confirms the scope and writes to the authority.
Know what happens after sending.
Agree whether receiving, reviewing or responding to a reply is included, and ask for a copy of the letter.
A helpful starting point
When and where you applied, any reference number and the last response you received.
What the law says
Section 14 VwVfG provides for authorised representation. A Sachstandsanfrage asks for information. For a formal request that the authority take action, see Anwaltliches Aufforderungsschreiben. [1] [2]
Common questions
What happens after the reply?
The lawyer can explain the response and help you decide whether to send documents, ask for a decision or assess court action.
What should the letter include?
Your reference number, the date you applied, the relevant correspondence and a clear request for an update.
